Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the most widely practiced and clinically advanced method of surgical hair restoration available today. Unlike earlier techniques that required removing a strip of scalp tissue, FUE harvests individual hair follicles from the donor area and relocates them to areas of thinning or loss. The result – for appropriate candidates – is a permanent redistribution of hair that grows, sheds, and cycles naturally.

Understanding FUE Hair Transplantation

Hair grows in naturally occurring groups called follicular units, typically containing one to four hairs. FUE preserves these groups intact as they are extracted from the donor area – typically the back and sides of the scalp, where follicles are genetically more resistant to the hormonal process that causes androgenetic alopecia. These follicular units are then implanted in the recipient area according to a carefully planned distribution designed to achieve natural density and hairline aesthetics.
Because FUE does not involve a linear incision, it leaves no linear scar. The extraction sites are small, circular, and heal without the visible scarring associated with older strip-harvesting techniques.

Robotic FUE vs. Manual FUE

ARTAS Robotic FUE

The ARTAS Robotic System uses AI-driven imaging and a robotic arm to identify, score, and extract follicular units with sub-millimeter precision. This reduces transection - accidental damage to follicles during extraction - and provides consistent, controlled harvesting at scale.

Manual FUE (NeoGraft)

NeoGraft uses a pneumatic suction system to extract and transfer follicles manually. It offers a high degree of control and flexibility, particularly for patients with specific scalp characteristics or smaller graft counts.

Who Is a Surgical Candidate?

Not every patient experiencing hair loss is a surgical candidate.
